International Animal Rescue have issued a code red  alert to draw attention to the plight of orangutans. These great apes have become critically endangered because they are losing their rainforest habitats to palm oil plantations.

Indonesia's rainforests are the lungs of the earth and our strongest defence against climate change. The trail of their destruction leads straight to our biscuit tins as brands like Oreo use 'dirty palm oil' to make their snacks.

We have promised to give up all packaged snacks for one month. We are also running a cake sale at school to raise money to adopt an orphaned orangutan from IAR's Orangutan Centre near Ketapang in Borneo. Adoption helps to pay for the lengthy and costly rehabilitation process each ape must go through before being released back into protected rainforest. With no mother to nurture them, they must learn how to climb, forage and build nests from their human babysitters.
