Trek to Angkor Wat · 9 November 2019

Hospice care eases the physical and emotional pain of death and dying. Letting people focus on living, right until the end. But too many people miss out on this essential care. Hospice UK fights for hospice care for all who need it, for now and forever.

Story

Having met on a charity bike ride in India almost 12 years ago we have become firm friends who have since undertaken further challenges together including a charity bike ride from Birmingham to York in 2009, Trekking the Great Wall of China in 2011 and completing the London Moonwalk, 2013.

Despite living opposite ends of the country we’ve packed in a lot of great times together and we share the motto – while we can, we will. So here we go again! – Trekking Cambodia, November 2019!!

Hopefully it will prove to be an amazing adventure but circumstances that have led to us undertaking this challenge certainly are not.

Leah – On October 26th October 2018 my amazing husband John lost his battle with stomach cancer, just 16 months following diagnosis. Anyone who knew John would describe him as ‘the fit guy’ so his diagnosis came as a great shock to us all. In his 55 years he achieved so much in his working and personal life and completed many adventures and challenges for charity including The Marathon Des Sables –a fantastic achievement.

He was very hardworking and much respected by so many. He adored his family and was my biggest cheerleader with never ending support - I know he would be encouraging me throughout this challenge.

As was John’s wish, we were able to care for him at home as a family, with expert support and guidance from Rowan’s Hospice who continue to support us now.

Liz – Unbelievably October 29th 2019 will mark 20 years since our son Harry lost his battle against Neuroblastoma, age 2.

Some may say “well it’s been 20 years” – my response to them is “yes, but the pain does not go with time, it still hurts however many years”. Sadly children continue to be affected by this terrible disease, our hope is a cure may one day be found.

Martin House hospice offered much needed support to allow us to care for Harry at home and are still part of our life – their support is eternal.

The Trek – We will trek to Angkor Wat over a 5 day period, trekking 6-7 hours per day. We will be sleeping in tents – so no luxury en route!

We plan to mark the anniversaries of John and Harry by completing this challenge and raise much needed funds for Hospice UK who support hospices throughout the UK including Rowan’s Hospice and Martin House.

We have funded the trip ourselves so every donation will go directly to the charity.
