Story

**POSTPONED DUE TO WINDSPEEDS, REBOOKED FOR 24TH SEPTEMBER 2017!

Hello everyone! ☺️

So I am going to be completing a tandem sky dive with my sister on the 10th of September 2017 for the Swindon and North Wiltshire Deaf Children’s Society!  I'm almost 100% sure i've lost my marbles wanting to jump out of a plane but the cause is one that's very important to me and therefore definitely worth it.

My sister, Jodie, was born profoundly deaf when I was just 18 months old. At the age of 2, Jodie underwent major surgery to provide her with a Cochlear Implant. For those that have not heard of this before, the implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear and provides sound signals to the brain. This gave her the option to wear a hearing aid which attaches to a magnet to give her the ability to hear. The charity's support throughout this time and the years after was invaluable.

I can honestly say that if the Deaf Children's Society had not been by our sides to support each of us individually, my sister would not be  the communicative and intelligent girl she is today and I really don't believe we would have been able to have coped with the matter so well. As for any family that have a family member who is diagnosed with a disability, support and education is essential and that is exactly what the society provided to us.

The NDCS is dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people. They represent the interests and campaign for the rights of all deaf children and young people from birth to independence, and I truly believe the work they do is outstanding.

I have met the most courageous and inspirational people through the society, who have become life long friends of mine and my family. I have some of the best memories  with the charity and have learnt skills that will stay with my forever. I have learnt to sign and communicate with deaf children and adults (although I can't keep up most of the time haha). I have also learnt to be accepting and not to take things or people for granted.

In more recent years, we have learned that my sister also has a condition called Usher Syndrome which causes night-blindness and loss of peripheral vision, however she has not let this effect her. Despite the difficulties, she is now at University training to be a teacher of the deaf, just like the ones she has met through the charity.

The charity has a huge place in my heart and I cannot give my thanks enough for everything they have done for us as a family. Please help me help the charity continue with the valuable work they do every day by donating anything you can :)
