Story
On the 18th of August a charity football match will be held in memory of Matthew Golbey who took his own life at age 24 in September 2017. His colleagues at Network Rail have organised this event to remember and honour Matthew and to raise awareness of men’s mental health.
For those of you who didn’t know Matthew, or Matt to his friends, he was a normal 24 year old who had lots of friends, loving family, a girlfriend, good job, and a young son Mason whom he adored. On the inside he was a young man who was battling depression and self worth fighting to keep his feelings to himself. On the 22nd September 2017 Matthew took his own life believing he wasn’t good enough for the people who loved him the most.
This isn’t an unusual incident in this country. On average 18 men take this action each day leaving many families broken and wondering why. The impact is everlasting and many lives are changed forever. Money raised at this event will go towards the Men’s mental health charity CALM, with the hope of offering support to those who need it.
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK.
