Scottish Sports Futures are a charity using sport to transform the lives of young, vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. Last year they were able to support over 7000 young people living in poverty with the aim of empowering them to be confident, healthy and happy.
Their “sport for change” programmes provide positive experiences, inspiring role models, engaging social education, training and youth volunteering opportunities that help young people fulfil their potential. They really are working with those challenged by living in deprivation, suffering poor health, low aspiration, chaotic lifestyles and lacking skills and qualifications. National statistics around health and wellbeing inequalities in Scotland still support the need for creative and effective approaches to transforming young lives.
Worryingly the number of young people in danger of leaving formal education with no qualifications, employment or positive destination is increasing. Young people are also more vulnerable to mental health problems than ever before –50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24. SSF successfully engage vulnerable communities across Scotland offering alternatives to traditional learning and personal development that consider the reality of living in poverty.
Physical activity is proven to have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing and with 20 new young ambassadors currently developing their own content and committed to tackling the issue and removing the stigma around mental health SSF are excited about what the future holds. With your support we can make a real and lasting difference to the lives of Scotland’s most vulnerable young people.
