Shine provides specialist support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as to parents, families, carers and professional care staff. Our wonderful supporters make our work possible, your fundraising makes all the difference!

Story

My son Carter lee James Sinclair was born at 23:35 on 29th December 2014 with Spina Bifida. We found out on our 20 week scan that carter had spina bifida, from there we had numerous appointments at the RVI hospital we're there kept checks on him.

We also got involved with a Facebook page called 'shine' which is awareness for children with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus. The charity and support was unreal, it prepared us 110% for carters arrival, we even met up with one of the mothers with there child who also had this condition.

Carter has L5 Myelomeningocele spina bifida and was born with a 10cm by 7cm hole in his lower back, the skin (sack) surrounding his hole burst during labour. He spent 2 nights in special care baby unit undergoing antibiotics and other treatment to prevent infection. On the 31st of December carter went down to undergo his operation to repair his back. This operation was a success. From there he had a MRI scan and an ultra sound scan which both came back positive.

After being home 3 days carter was rushed back into the RVi as his back which was originally operated on expanded like a balloon with spinal fluid which then begin to leak from the wound.

Carter was taken down to theatre which we thought would be a quick operating to stitch the wound back shut. However we were devestated to find carter needed a shunt ( small device placed into the head to drain the fluid into his stomach).

After all if this we we're in and out of newcastles Rvi as his back kept building up and bursting. First time there glued it shut after few days at home this burst again! We got admitted on the 27th jan for them to go ahead with another opp on the 28th.

This time, there removed the shunt out his head (which he didn't seem to need) and fitted him with an external ventricular draining tube, this is a tube that goes into his brain and drains out if his head into bag so we can control the flow of spinel fluid, this is a temporary measure for few weeks to give his back time to heal, there also re-opened his back up and glued and stitched the muscles underneath the skin, after few weeks in the Rvi this time things seem to be going ok and working so far,

Carter has been on a long journey so far in his short life and I want to raise as much money as I can to help this charity to help another child just like there did with Carter.

We would like to thank all family and friends for the help and support we have received an for all his gifts also a massive thank-you to mrs Nicholson (neurosurgeon) and to all nurses in ward 1B at the Rvi! With out these people we wouldn't have kept as strong as we did for carters sake
