We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.

Story

Every morning one third of the world’s population - that’s two billion people - wake up in appalling poverty.

Poverty housing damages people’s lives:-
· It affects people’s health and well-being;
· It destroys their employment prospects;
· It affects their children’s education.
· It is dirty, smelly and often unsafe.,
· It keeps the poorest people poor, robbing them of hope and opportunity, keeping them dependent and vulnerable.

What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is an international housing charity that brings communities in need together with volunteers providing resources to build simple and decent housing.
Since being set up 32 years ago Habitat for Humanity have built 250,000 homes in partnership with people in need of decent shelter.

On Saturday 18 October 2008 for 2 weeks I will go to Tanzania and join a team of 12 volunteers. I will be working & living alongside the local community helping to build a  home for a local family. I could be doing anything from digging foundations, laying blocks, making window frames, plastering, painting or gardening. Since a young age I have always felt called to help relieve poverty in Africa. So when this opportunity appeared he felt led through prayer to join a team.

Why Tanzania?                                                                                                           Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world - 50% of the population living in households officially classified as poor - The need for decent housing in Tanzania is enormous many village families live in houses, made of mud stuck to a wooden frame, with rarely enough space for the family size - In urban areas, whole families often live in one or two rooms, sharing inadequate ‘facilities’ with ten or more other families.
