Everesting Cycle Challenge · 8 July 2017

We exist to defend the right to a safe home and fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society. We believe that home is everything.

Story

Ever...resting- something I'll likely be doing a lot of after this ridiculous challenge. 8,848 metres (29,029ft) of climbing...on a bike. Sounds like a real hoot eh?

So how does it work? - I have chosen a hill in Surrey (Combe Lane) which I'll need to climb approximately 84 times to reach the intended elevation. The event is scheduled to start on 8th July but may be postponed by a week depending on the weather. I am allowed breaks but no kipping on the job (especially while descending). The total distance will be around 165 miles & is likely to take anywhere from 12 - 18 hours depending on how many marbles I lose on the way up. The highest elevation I've climbed to this date in 24 hours is 4114 metres (13,500ft - Mauna Keana) so this will be more than double my record when measured in terms of flapjacks scoffed.

This idea originally started with a website called Hells500 as a super climbing challenge that is accessible by all - as unfortunately not all of us have the Alpe D'Huez on our doorstep. They have created a set of rules over what constitutes a true Everesting & should I succeed they will verify the ride:

I'll have my car nearby to keep me topped up with food & drink (I'm budgeting for 8500 calories), and as a space to assume the fetal position when time allows as well as a getaway vehicle in case of encounters with gangs of rabid badgers.

Anyone who is interested is more than welcome to come down & say "Hi" & throw flapjacks at me from the roadside, or if you ride come join me on a few laps & act as Sherpa - believe me I'll appreciate the company. I'll likely be setting off pre-dawn & riding through the day as I'd like to only see one night if possible.

Why do I do this? I think of climbing a bit like eating a vindaloo. Pleasure & pain combined, leading to an uncertain ending & new discoveries about what the human body is capable of.

I am hoping to raise £500 for the charity Shelter who help homeless people find a secure home - a cause I'm sure you can appreciate that needs all the help it can get in these difficult times. Every pound that I raise will be generously matched by my company Deluxe so you'd be making a huge difference to people's lives with any amount you can spare.

Thank you.
