My name is Gill White and I am the author of Leo and the Lightning Dragons, a children’s picture book published by Fledgling Press. I wrote the book for my son Leo who suffers from Ohtahara Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy. Children diagnosed with Ohtahara Syndrome are not expected to live past their second birthday. Leo defied those odds and survived until he was six and a half years old.
Leo and the Lightning Dragons is an uplifting rhyming story encouraging children to persevere and find strength in the face of adversity, even when it seems that nothing is working.
Leo certainly did that. His condition meant that his life was very difficult but he fought every single day of it to stay here with us and we are so proud of our incredible little boy.
Sadly Leo passed away on 16th March 2022. We were at Rachel House in Kinross, one of the two CHAS Children's Hospices.
CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland) is an incredible organisation. They have been looking after us since Leo was 2 months old and have been there to support us in a number of ways throughout his life – I hate to think what our lives would be like without them. They’re amazing and we cannot think of a better way to say thank you than to raise funds in Leo's name to help them offer the same kind of support we received to other children with life shortening conditions and their families.
