We are both running the Great North Run to raise money for Kidney Research UK.

In 2017, I completed the Great North Run in my 60th year having previously completed it in 1981. I ran for Cancer Research which is a charity close to my heart, having claimed several members of my family. I raised an amazing £1000 as a result. I have decided I shouldn’t wait another 36 years to run it again and in my wisdom, I have signed up for this year and will be running on behalf of Kidney Research alongside my son-in-law Kevin.

When my father in law told me he was running race for life for a second year running, I agreed to run with him. We decided on running for Kidney Research as it is a charity that has directly impacted my family. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in 2014. This is a disease already known to me and my family as we lost my nan to this is a genetic disorder in 2012. My mum is also a sufferer and is currently preparing to start dialysis.
We have chosen Kidney Research UK as it is their mission to fund life-saving research into kidney disease, to improve the quality of life of those with kidney disorders and to increase public awareness of kidney health. Kidney Disease is currently incurable and treatment focuses on managing the symptoms. I am lucky enough that currently my diagnosis doesn’t affect my daily life at the moment and hope by raising money and awareness it will support the research to find a cure.
So, the hard work and training starts now; the 13 miles, 21km run is on September the 9th, that gives us 6 month to get up to speed and hopefully, we can finish fit and well with a 2 hour target!
We will post from time to time on our training progression, to keep any sponsors up to speed, wish us luck!
