I have Episodic Ataxia Type 2 which is associated with a mutation in the CACNA1A gene; this gene plays a vital role in the communication between neurons in the brain. 

I could tell you about all the things I  can’t do and all my health issues, which are many.However, I would rather tell you about all my favorite things and how Ataxia UK has helped me......

I love being with my friends and family, going on holiday, swimming, cycling, surfing, dancing, singing, cooking.I love being with my friends from Jersey Mencap, Acorn and Adult Day Services. Ataxia UK has helped me to understand my condition, and manage its symptoms; this has meant that I am more able to enjoy these things.

During the pandemic Ataxia UK has provided a zoom link to young people in the UK with similar conditions under the Ataxia umbrella. We support each other and share our interests; their help has been invaluable over the last year.

I visited the Ataxia Clinic in London just prior to the pandemic and am awaiting an inpatient appointment once the pandemic is over.

Ataxia UK is constantly fundraising to provide support services for people living with this condition. It’s fundraising also goes towards  research into a cure, better treatment and better outcomes for people living with Ataxia. Our personal experience shows how friendly and person centered their support is...we can’t thank them enough!
