We help burn injured children to make scars no limit to their lives

Story

cerys would like to raise awareness of the dangers associated with hot dinks and children, and raise money for the amazing charity that have offered her so much support and some amazing opportunities. she has been offered a place at Manchester burns camp, which is fully funded. It costs £800 per child to attend the camp, and cerys would like to give something back to the charity. Here’s her story:

On the 2nd March 2010, Cerys suffered a severe scald injury to her right leg and stomach at the age of Just 11 months, through the very common accident of pulling over a freshly made cup of tea. She was transferred via ambulance from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd  to Alder Hey’s Burn’s unit, where she was in intensive care for 8 days. Cerys suffered septicaemia through her scald injury as a result of the awkward position and size of the burn, making dressing the wound for the hospital transfer difficult, and infection set in very quickly. Cerys then underwent surgery to her leg scald to ‘deep clean’ the wound, and was eventually discharged after 8 days, but needing to return to Alder Hey twice a week for dressing changes.

Although this injury occurred almost 8 years ago, Cerys is still seen regularly by a plastic surgeon at Alder Hey due to the extensive scarring that she has been left with and to assess when will be the best time to plan for surgery to reduce the scar which does still cause her discomfort.

A few years ago, Alder Hey put Cerys forward for the Manchester Burns camp as they are allocated a limited number of places, funded by the Children’s Burns Foundation however, due to her being so young and not having the confidence to go away without us, she turned this down. She has now been offered the opportunity again, which she will this time be accepting. This camp will give her the opportunity to meet other children who are dealing with burns scars, and an opportunity to discuss and gain support with dealing with the emotional and physical challenges that the scars cause.

Cerys has decided that she wants to give something back to the charity for the amazing opportunities and support that they offer, so has made a couple of bears at our local 'be my bear workshop', which she will be doing a guess the name of the bear with to raise money. Cerys would like to raise £500 which is the cost for one burns victim to attend the week long camp.

Every little helps, and if anyone would like to support Cerys with her fundraising, any stand alone donations will also be greatly appreciated.

From a mother’s point of view, I will never forget that day. The phone calls and literally running from the office to where she was to find her in the back of an ambulance, all strapped up and screaming in pain with the paramedics rushing around her. Every parents nightmare! The following wee, months, years, were just as difficult, seeing her in pain, seeing her panick about the prospect of surgery, and sd seeing her in so much discomfort with her scars. I am so proud of her for how she doesn’t let it all bring her down, despite the bad times, she’s always so positive! Her determination to help other people through fundraising, and her desire to fund her own place at the burns camp, is a true reflection of the amazing little lady she is. I couldn’t be any more proud!
