Story
We are collecting donations for the British Lung Foundation in memory of our mum, Meg Radmore, who died on 13th July 2013. Mum would have been 88 on the 6th September and we miss her terribly.
Although mum had suffered for many years with the crippling illness osteoporosis, it was not this that actually killed her but fibrosis of the lung for which she had only received a diagnosis for in May complicated by pneumonia. Mum blamed both the osteoposis and the fibrosis mum blamed on her smoking, despite the fact that she stopped many years ago and was never a heavy smoker.
Mum was not diagnosed with the fibrosis until shortly before her death. She had been losing weight over a period of the last 9-12 months and had had a persistent cough. She visited her doctor a number of times and he had been treating her for a possible ulcer. It wasn't until she was feeling very poorly in September 2012 and we took her into the Casualty Department that they told her that they suspected she had fibrosis of the lung and referred her back to her GP.
Finally she got to see a lung specialist and he sent her for a CT scan and said he would see her in May. At this appointment she was told that she had the fibrosis of the lung and a "disease of the airways". A couple of weeks later she was feeling unwell again so we took her back into Casualty where she was admitted with pneumonia.
We thought she was doing OK and had recovered from the pneumonia, although we did know that because of the fibrosis her prognosis was not good, but she was sent for two weeks rehabilitation so we were optimistic. However as soon as she came home she started going downhill and a week later she was moved into a nursing home on end of life care.
My sister and I, her grandchildren and her friends spent as much time as we could with her over the next few days and were all able to tell her how much we all loved her but sadly on Saturday 13th July 2013, mum passed away.
Lung disease is a horrible illness and we can only be thankful that mum's suffering from it was short-lived but for many it is debilitating and lengthy. We have lost our beautiful and brave mum, Nana and friend and we will never recover from that loss but hopefully with the donations we receive we can help others with the same disease to prolong their lives.
