Women for Women- Cycle Jordan Event 2 · 11 October 2009 ·
Yes that mad mother and daughter have gone and done it now... Lesley and Katie have signed up for a 300km bike ride in October this year !! 300km!! oh my word !! Why, oh Why! I hear you cry would they put themselves through such a gruelling task?!!. . . The courage of one very special little 2 year old girl called Poppy Belle has been the inspiration to make Lesley and Katie want to actively do something to raise funds for a charity called Women for Women.
Poppy was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer in September 2007 when she was just 7 months old. Her condition is called Retinoblasoma - this means that Poppy has cancerous tumours in both of her eyes. After undergoing 5 months of Chemotherapy the tumors calcified, so they now exist as dormant scars in her eyes which has left her without sight in one eye. Due to the nature of Poppy's condition the tumours can become cancerous again at any time. This happened in October last year. Some new tumours emerged but by using a process called Cryotherapy they were frozen and thankfully this was successful in preventing further growth. Poppy has a general anaesthetic every 3- 6 weeks to examine her eyes. She will continue this process until she is between the ages of 7 - 10years old.
