Story

After a long recovery post-endo surgery, I’m taking on the full Camino de Santiago, walking 500 miles over 6 weeks for Endometriosis UK, a charity very close to my heart.

I start my trek on the 25th of September, walking from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France across the Pyrenees into the north of Spain. Along the way, I’ll be passing cities like Pamplona, Leon & Ponferrada, heading towards the city of Santiago de Compostela where I’ll finish my journey on the 4th of November.

In November 2021, I was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis, the most advanced grade of the condition. This diagnosis came after over 8 years of severe pelvic pain, painful periods and hot flushes. In February this year, I had a 4-hour cross surgery with a specialist gynae and bowel surgeon to remove cells, lesions and scar tissue from my bladder, bowel, lower back and ovaries. The recovery has been tough, with some ongoing health issues that doctors can’t seem to explain. As well, a recent scan has revealed that the endo is back. It's been an incredibly challenging time, but I’m determined to remain as positive as possible.

Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue like the lining of the womb grows around other organs, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. In severe cases, like mine, the tissue can spread to other parts of your body. This incurable, invisible illness can make it difficult to carry out normal day-to-day activities like socialising, which can have a big impact on relationships.

Finding a cure and preventing endo may take decades of research, but it’s important we start by raising awareness so women don’t feel alone and isolated.

In April, I joined the Endometriosis UK team, volunteering as an online moderator for their forum. Thanks to the charity, I’m lucky enough to have met some amazing women and feel like I have a supportive network.

Helping me fundraise for Endometriosis UK will make a difference to the 1.5 million people living with endo in the UK. With your help, the endometriosis team can continue to provide support, much-needed information and continue campaigning for change.

Whether you give 50p or £50, every penny will go straight to supporting this incredible charity.

I will be posting regular updates on this page as well as my Instagram accounts @AnekaH and @ChallengeAneka.

Ending endometriosis starts by saying it.

Thank you ❤️
