Story

Taking part in one of our mini EPT challenges. Raising awareness and funds to enable the EPT to continue to provide information, education and support to those affected by early pregnancy complications and to the health professionals who care for them.

I personally experienced an ectopic pregnancy back in October of 2021. On Tuesday, September 28th, 2021, I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I were very excited! We had been trying for 3 months. However, something did not seem right. I called my obgyn's office to set up my first appointment. My first appointment was set for Wednesday, October 20th. I then asked to speak to a nurse or doctor. I told the nurse my symptoms. She told me it might be normal, but that it might not be. She told me she would tell my doctor and then get back to me. The nurse called me back later that day. My doctor wanted me to do some blood tests. She wanted to do a blood test and then repeat the blood test in 48 hours. My blood tests showed low progesterone and my hcg levels did not double in 48 hours. My doctor told me she wanted to see me ASAP to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. I saw my doctor with my mom on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021. She had an ultra sound done and then met with me afterwards for an office visit. She told me she saw an ectopic pregnancy in my right tube. She comforted me and told me it would be okay. Per Mercy protocol, I had to get a second opinion at the hospital. My doctor made the appointment for the following day. The following day, my husband took me to my appointment where my ectopic pregnancy was confirmed. I talked to my doctor. My hcg levels were significantly dropping, which meant that my body was trying to naturally miscarry. My doctor gave me a choice. The choice was to wait and see if my body miscarried naturally, but to be on constant lookout for warnings from my body and be ready to go to the emergency room for emergency surgery; or she could schedule me for surgery the next day. Not wanting to live every day in a panic with a possible "ticking time bomb," I decided to have the surgery. I had surgery on Friday, October 8th. My right tube was damaged beyond repair, so I lost my right tube. Luckily, my doctor told me my left tube is completely healthy, so I have hope for a healthy pregnancy in the future. My doctor saved my life, so I am eternally grateful to her! This has taken a toll on me physically and emotionally. No matter how this ended, this was my first pregnancy. Although I was only 7 weeks along, this is still hard for me. Thinking of who this child could have been if he or she made it to my uterus. Baby McMullin, I will always remember you and I will always love you.
