As many other families in the UK mine has been affected my someone close to me suffering from a stroke.  I watched my husband come to terms with the fact that his Dad had become a different person over night. 

He was an independant, sociable, out going person, who loved to pass the time of day with a good catch up, he lived alone with his dog, cooked and cleaned for himself and was happy to get on with life.  The stroke had a huge impact on every aspect of his life, the staff in the care home attend to most of his needs now and he is unable to walk unaided, he relys on the use of a wheelchair more and more.  We barely recognise him now, he is quiet and withdrawn and is a shadow of his former self.  The stroke didn't just change his life it had an impact on the whole family and is still affecting us nearly 3 years on!

I feel fortunate that I have this opportunity to raise money and awareness for The Stroke Association while having this great once in a life time experience.
