From 21st to 27th September 2014 Lynn & Andrea will once again be walking the Thames Path from Lechlade to Windsor, a total of approx 110 miles, to raise money for Lifecentre ( www.lifecentre.uk.com ) a fantastic charity that supports survivors of rape & sexual abuse to unlock the past, survive the present and reclaim the future. Andrea was involved in helping to set up Lifecentre over 12 years ago and is Chair of Trustees. Lynn is now Lifecentre's Clinical Lead & has been involved with Lifecentre since 2002 when she began volunteering on the phone lines, training helpline volunteers as well as being one of Lifecentre's professional face to face counsellors.
We would like you to give generously because sexual violation is a horrendous experience to go through male or female, child or adult, and is potentially extremely isolating because, as a society, we don't like to talk about it, even after there have been so many high profile cases in the media. Lifecentre provides the help & support desperately needed so people don't have to be alone in overcoming this nightmare trauma and can really make strides in getting their life back.
Lifecentre is right now launching a network to encourage, support & train other groups and individuals who are supporting survivors of sexual violation. Lynn & Andrea will be walking one of the Uk's major river networks to raise vital funds to help launch this essential Lifecentre Network.
Please do give as much as you can. Your cash will help Lifecentre bring release to those trapped in their trauma. Thank you.
Andrea Clarke and Lynn Suter
More about the Lifecentre Network:-
Each year, approximately 400,000 females and 72,000 males report having been sexually assaulted in England and Wales. On average that is 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 8 boys that have suffered some form of sexual abuse. The ripple effects of this human rights atrocity are impacting millions upon millions of people around the world.
Despite the volume of people affected by sexual abuse, specialised aftercare provision is in short supply. Survivors have few places to turn for support and existing services are often over subscribed. Lifecentre Sussex started in 2001 in response to the recognition that there were no specialised services available between Portsmouth and Brighton for people who had been raped and sexually abused. We started small by running a volunteer helpline 2 nights a week and now have 5 venues across Sussex and Surrey providing face to face counselling alongside many other specialised services. We are and always have been a grassroots project and believe very strongly in meeting the needs in your own locality.
Although our role in South West England is a large and important one, we recognise that our efforts don't solve the problem nationally or internationally. It is a postcode lottery. For that to happen it requires many other like minded people to join forces and empower one another. There are many other locations around the world that are crying out for similar services but without the right training and support they rarely get off the ground.
The Lifecentre Network was set up to help eliminate these barriers and provide training and policies, consultancy and support to those working with, or hoping to work with, survivors of sexual violation. Our aim is increase and improve support services for survivors around the world so that no survivor has to be alone.
