The Light The Lakes event sees teams of police officers, staff, retired officers and police friends light up the famous Wainwright fells of Cumbria in memory of colleagues killed.

Story

We are a compact team of North Kesteven officers climbing Raven Crag in support of Care of Police Survivors (COPS).

Once we reach the top of our Peak, between the hours of 02:30 and 03:00 on the Saturday 22nd of June 2019 - we will light a blue flare, alongside many other forces on many other peaks. This is in remembrance of the fallen officers from the thin blue line.

Any Support of our climb is greatly appreciated.

Care of Police Survivors (otherwise known as COPS) is a UK registered charity dedicated to helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives whilst on duty. We aim to ensure that survivors have all the help they need to cope with such a tragedy, and that they remain part of the police family as they rebuild their lives.

COPS is independent of the police service and was founded in March 2003 by Jim McNulty and Christine Fulton (MBE). Jim was a retired police officer from Strathclyde Police. Christine is the widow of PC Lewis Fulton who was murdered on duty in Glasgow in 1994.

Christine's experience of that tragedy gave her a unique understanding of the overwhelming grief and confusion that is encountered by new survivors. COPS makes contact with the survivors of every officer who loses their life on duty, explaining what COPS does and inviting them to make contact when they are ready for such support.

‘While realising the dangers of policing, no officer expects to lose their life on duty. When such a tragedy occurs, the surviving family endures emotions which can include denial, bewilderment, anger and depression. They also encounter many practical difficulties in respect of such sudden loss. Eventual isolation from the police environment often exacerbates such situations, and leaves survivors thinking that no one understands. '
