Trigger Warning: Pregnancy Loss
In the UK alone:
1 in 3 women will have an abortion
More than 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage
1 in 250 births are stillbirths
There is not enough mental health support for the women and people with uteruses who go through these painful experiences, leading many to suffer in silence. For some people, these experiences are the most painful experiences of their lives, yet stigma causes them to be unable to discuss their thoughts and feelings to their friends and families.
Pregnancy loss can lead to extreme mental health issues when feelings surrounding it are not explored properly. Many people report feeling anxious, depressed, guilty and lost after going through it. The NHS currently offers no specialised counselling for pregnancy loss.
This is why I’m swimming the length of the Thames from Chelsea to Greenwich (640 lengths) over 20 days in March in order to fundraise money for Choices Islington.
Choices Islington is a London based charity that offers a variety of services such as post abortion counselling, unplanned pregnancy advice, a relationship course and prison counselling. They support women and partners through the unplanned pregnancy and beyond, offering specialised and non-judgemental advice.
Please give whatever you can to help those who are suffering with their mental health after experiencing pregnancy loss.
