ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon 2018 · 8 April 2018 ·
Yes, it is true, we are actually running the Manchester marathon. Training has not really been what we intended but we are going to put mind over matter and even if we have to crawl our way over the finish line - we will complete it! Because this cause is worth the blood, sweat and tears. And if Martin can fight cancer, we can ruddy well run a marathon!
Also Berry Bros. & Rudd will very generously match every £1 that we raise - so everything you give is worth twice the value!
So that is our story - last September Jo's husband Martin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and has been through aggressive treatment ever since. He has successfully completed two rounds of Chemo, resulting in remission, for now. Chemotherapy can unfortunately can only manage this disease, and a hope of a cure comes in the form of a bone marrow transplant. Martin has been found a successful match through the amazing team at UCLH and prepared to start the treatment at Christmas.
Following some delay due to pesky colds he checked back in to UCLH for his transplant on January 25th. Fast forward seven weeks and he is home and recovering well.
We are incredibly lucky in that he has responded well so far, he has health and age on his side and a massive support network. This is a tough journey for anyone to face, but hats off to those with dependants or who have less support than us. You are all doing an amazing job!
Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as Martin, 10% of patients struggle to find a donor and despite the hard work of several charities, DKMS, Anthony Nolan Trust, the search remains unsuccessful for them.
Therefore we need your help to donate to Anthony Nolan, so they can continue their great work. Also, please consider becoming a stem cell donor yourself as the more people are on the list, the more matches and the more lives saved.
