The Big Half 2022 · 4 September 2022 ·

We are a small charity run entirely by volunteers in the UK. We focus on a remote rural area of Kenya called Kipkelion. It’s a mountainous and somewhat neglected region with about 300,000 inhabitants, most of whom live by subsistence farming. Many people in Kipkelion live miles from the nearest hospital, and most schools are poorly equipped. We work in partnership with a locally based Kenyan NGO to provide clean water and sanitation in schools in Kipkelion, to ensure that pupils (especially girls) can attend school regularly. We also provide resources to bring basic medical facilities to the remote areas of the region, in collaboration with local health officials. We are also active in encouraging the local people in their efforts to eradicate FGM in the area. All of our work is done in partnership with the local community and is guided by their decisions as to their priorities, so that all of our projects are designed to be completely sustainable and of permanent benefit to the community.

Story

You might recall that in recent years we have done an annual challenge to support the work of Brighter Communities Worldwide (BCW) in Kenya.

In 2020, we paddled 32km down the Thames River in 8 hrs and raised £1500.

In 2021, we made it up Beinn Eighe (1010m) in Scotland and summitted two Munros in challenging highland conditions and raised £2642.

So what is the plan for 2022 you ask?  How about a half marathon in London for Friends of Kipkelion (A long-term partner of BCW)??!!

While Bernie has been trail running for some time, Linden has not run seriously for more than 3 decades.  We have been in training - but these 21km will still be a big challenge around the streets of London.

Our efforts are still no match for many of the daily challenges of those in the communities of north-west Kenya where BCW works.  And this motivates us every year to challenge ourselves to raise funds.

BCW celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year - so we need to beat our previous fundraising efforts.  Please sponsor us.
