After many years of applying I am one of the lucky ones to have secured a place in this year’s London Marathon via the ballot, this has given me the opportunity to run for a charity of my choice and I have chosen to support an incredible local charity called R;pple.

R;pple are quite simply amazing.

Alice their founder, lost her brother age 21 in November 2020 to suicide. Through her heartache and journey of grief she has developed a digital tool which intercepts harmful searches online.

R;pple is an add on to a browser and once installed will pop up on the search engine when a harmful search has been made. The individual is immediately guided through a filter of breathing exercises and then very simple, uncluttered and calmly presented signposting for Mental Health support: accompanied with messages of hope and encouragement.

This is helping to ensure more support is given to individuals when they are at their most vulnerable.

Online searches for suicide methods have increased by 50% in the last 2 years with searches for suicide support lines also up by 150% since January 2019.

R;pple is working with education settings, charities & businesses and have already made a difference in just over a year.

The impact of R;pple so far:

R;pple has been downloaded over 975000 times, it has intercepted just over 5500 harmful searches, they have won 22 awards in the mental health and innovation space and although they don't collect any personally identifiable information and R;pple has had 24 individuals contact them to inform them they have saved their life.

Any fundraising for R;pple will go towards helping reduce the stark and heartbreaking numbers of Suicide, help expand R;pple globally by creating country specific versions of R;pple to support people worldwide, and it will help expand R;pple to be compatible with mobile and tablet devices. At present it’s available to download on computers and laptops. 

R;pple is a charity doing something so very close to my heart. My families life  changed forever when we lost our beautiful Abi in January 2022. Through our fundraising for R;pple we will give others hope and in turn help their  families not to have to live with daily heartbreak and pain that comes with losing a loved one to suicide.
