Story

Hi, thanks for visiting my page and learning more about why I ride! My name is Lindsey Ferris and I am a senior here at UT Austin. I am studying English honors and linguistics with a certificate in creative writing. I am passionate about helping people get their story out and making sure all voices are heard. After graduation I plan to go into the Publishing industry to accomplish this goal.

Outside of class, I’ve been a part of Texas Spirits and Longhorn Singers since my freshman year. I also have written for Hot House Literary Magazine and The Daily Texan. I’ve been so lucky to find a home on the forty acres with these organizations and Texas 4000.

I am from just north of Houston in Kingwood, Texas. In my free time I love to read, sing and eat copious amounts of chocolate.

If your life has been affected by cancer, I'd love to hear your story and dedicate my ride to you and your family. Please feel free to reach out to me at lindseyferris@utexas.edu .

I’m so proud to be a part of this team and start the journey to Alaska, every mile for the fight against cancer.

WHY I RIDE

I don’t remember when I first learned about cancer; it’s a word that has always floated on the outskirts of life, brought up occasionally, causing voices to quiet and faces to grow somber. The first time cancer truly impacted my life was when I was in middle school and my Grandma was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer. I did not understand the seriousness of what stage four meant until she was hospitalized. She fought hard and every step of the battle she made was with the strength of her family supporting her. Her Husband, seven kids with their significant others, eight grandkids, and every single person she had met in her long and adventurous life. She was a flame that burned bright, not even cancer could dim her light. Now, our family continues to hold up her torch. I ride for my grandma and I ride for every person affected by her loss.

Cancer takes away so many lives, memories yet to be made, and stories not yet completed. I ride for everyone that cancer takes a toll on. I ride in memory of those we’ve lost and those who have won their fight. I ride for the people left behind when a loved one leaves too soon. I ride so that one day no has to fear losing their mom, grandma, dad, grandpa, sister, brother, or friend. I ride to unite with others in the common fight against cancer. I ride to try my best to help make a difference.

Please join me in fighting cancer every mile!

I began Texas 4000 with the plan to carry my affected family and friends in my heart from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska but my list of who I ride for gets longer every day. I ride for my teammates and their stories, and I ride for you and anyone in your life who has fought cancer. We dedicate every meeting, training session, and ride day to someone affected by cancer, so please share your stories with me by emailing lindseyferris@utexas.edu. Your story and every story matters; I would love to honor you or someone you know on my ride.
