Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am taking part in this year's #Challenge60 for Clic Sargent. Completing 60 miles throughout the month of September to support Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
MALCOLM'S TRAVELS
Malcolm's Travels is a walk between all the Morrisons stores in the Manchester and Liverpool region during Childhood Cancer Awareness month carrying a Clic Sargent teddy.
Throughout September, Malcolm the teddy will be transported by store colleagues in any way we wish except for the use of motorised vehicles! Starting from our Buxton store finally finishing at our Warrington store visiting each of the other stores in between. The aim of Malcolm's Travels is to get 10 colleagues from each store to raise £100 each. This would mean we would raise an amazing £24,000 for Clic Sargent during September Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
The Childhood Cancer Awareness month is themed around a young cancer patients travel to hospital for treatment. It is a 60 mile round trip on average for families travelling for cancer treatment. This isn't by choice. Many young cancer patients have to travel to specialist cancer centres to get the care they need- they don't just go to their local hospital. Travelling for treatment costs an average of £180 per month when treatment is at it's most intense. As treatment can go on for years, families can face terrible money worries. One Mum told Clic Sargent their savings were completely wiped out by the costs of staying in a hotel close to the hospital. The treatment was 180 miles round trip from the family home. On top of that stress, they had to rely on their parents to cover the cost of fuel and food for the rest of the family. This isn't right.
Earlier this year, Morrisons and Clic Sargent were delighted to announce that our partnership had been extended for an extra year. The additional money raised in year 4 of the partnership will fund a new Clic Sargent Home from Home near the Christie hospital in Manchester. This will be a national centre for specialist childhood cancer treatments such as Proton Beam Therapy, CAR-T treatment and Gerome Sequencing.
Home from Home are havens for families when their child is going through cancer trearment. They're free and close to principal treatment centres, helping families avoid the extra financial burdens of travel, accommodation and food costs. Home from Home also allow young cancer patients to be close to their loved ones, keeping the family together at a difficult time.
Malcolm is named after Sir Malcolm Sargent. As chief conductor of the Proms from 1948 - 1967, Sir Malcolm Sargent gained his widest fame making the Last Night into a high ratings broadcast celebration. He was noted for his witty addresses to the audiences. In October 1967, not long after his last appearance at the Last Night of the Proms, Sir Malcolm Sargent died. His long term friend Slyvia Darley OBE set up the Malcolm Sargent Cancer fund for Children in 1968 in his memory.
In 2005, Sargent Cancer Care for Children merged with Clic to form Clic Sargent, the UKs leading cancer care charity for young cancer patients.
