Warwick Lions Club is celebrating our 60th year since our charter in 1961. To celebrate, we are setting our sights on a big goal - to raise £6000 by the end of 2021. The pandemic hit our funds hard so we are hoping to make up some ground this year!

Story

I have been a member of Warwick Lions Club since 1984. The Club is 60 years old this year. Since then we have helped thousands in need in the Warwick and Leamington area. My current role within Warwick Lions is that of Welfare Officer - sourcing and dispensing aid to those in difficult personal circumstances. I am proud to be part of this.

In a normal year we raise close to £15,000. The two main fundraisers are the Warwick Town Bonfire and Carols in the Castle. Since March 2020 and Covid, at a time when demand was high, all fundraising activities had to be shut down. So to mark the 60th anniversary of the Club, each member has agreed to undertake a fundraising effort reflecting the figure six. All money raised goes to helping local people in need.

Having reached the ripe old age of 86 (yes another six) I decided to set myself a target of “something a bit risky and a bit mad”. So I have booked to go on a sponsored wing-walk on July10 -  who knows, maybe fly as one of the oldest ever! The flight will last around 15 minutes in the air and gain a height of around 500 feet at speeds of up to 140 mph, atop a 1940’s Boeing biplane. Hosts at Go Wingwalking - see them at www.gowingwalking.com  - have promised the experience will give an unforgettable aerial view of the Cotswolds.

Having got over the initial euphoria of making the booking, buyer’s remorse did creep in, but I’m over that now. The main thing that’s keeping me going is the thought of what any money raised can do for other people less fortunate than me.

I hope you will dig deep in your pockets to support this crazy venture and help Warwick Lions hit our goal of £6000!

The aim of every Lions Club is to promote and benefit the less fortunate in our own localities. The money we raise is spent locally in the Warwick and Leamington Spa area to help individuals and families with needs that they cannot meet themselves, such as food, baby supplies, or furniture.
