My Story.
My Name is Lisa Bailey I am a mobile hairstylist and live in Bearsted in Kent. This is my fiftieth birthday year and to mark the occasion I had a list of numerous treats lined up. Breast cancer was not on that list.
It was during a session in the swimming pool on holiday that I discovered a lump while drying myself. It was at the top, front of my breast that looked like a spot but when I scratched it was very painful.
Thinking it was just a cyst I thought nothing of it but decided on my return home to get it checked properly by a doctor. I was referred to The Peggy Wood Breast Care Centre in the Maidstone hospital.
There I met the wonderful Dr Jenny Weeks it was she who performed 3 mammograms, 2 ultrasound scans and gave me 4 biopsies over a period of three hours. She then took me into a private room and had to deliver her verdict. Yes I should prepare myself for the worst, but I said "I’m busy, I’ve got things to do; more holidays to go on. Her reply still makes me smile “no its never convenient is it”.
From that moment a series of events are set in motion; You are given a specific MacMillan Nurse Mine is the lovely Kat Firth who incidentally was amazing in helping my Husband Adrian come to terms with the news and dealing with his concerns. Then there are the appointments booked with your Surgeon in my case the Brilliant Mr Devalia to discuss what type of treatment and in what order it takes place will be best for me. Further appointments and checks included an MRI scan, a bone Scan and a CT scan. The information and care given is exceptional.
I am now at the oncology Stage which I have to admit is not so pleasant but the two nurses are lovely Andrea and Louise looked after me for 3 hours in the Charles Dickens Day Care Centre.
So it is with all this in mind that I would like to say thank you and try to give something back with your help. After all they are saving my life.
Also I would like to say a special thank you to my lovely friend Anna Marshall, for helping her technically challenged hairdresser make this possible and for my fantastic hairdresser of 17 years Sam of SO Hairdressing Bearsted who opened the salon on his day off and cut my hair off so I could donate it to the Little Princesses Trust, who makes wigs for children.
Lastly I would like to mention Anna Firth (Macmillan Nurse) Mrs Chalmers (Surgeon consultant) for seeing me on an already busy schedule to belay my concerns of having gangrene and most important but often forgotten anaesthetists David Golden and his assistant Clare.
