We support people with dementia in Scotland to make sure nobody faces dementia alone

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I just want to give you a little bit of background into why I want to raise money for Dementia Dog. Just over 2 years ago I lost my wee gran Agnes after watching her suffer a long battle with the horrible disease that is dementia. I wanted to do something in her memory but also raise money for a worthwhile cause at the same time to help other people who are currently facing this battle. After doing quite a lot of research I came across Dementia Dog and I think the work they are doing fantastic and it saddens me to know that the only have funding available until 31 August 2019, which means although current families with a dementia dog remain unaffected, no further families could benefit from this life-changing opportunity. It costs an estimated £21,000 for each Dementia Dog – this covers 2 years of specialised training, placing it with a family and providing ongoing support to the family for the remaining working lifetime of the dog.

Anyone who knows me will know how much I love my long hair and changing it to all different colours from bright red, to grey and back to blonde. The thought of shaving it off terrifies me, but it’s nowhere near as scary as it must be for someone living with dementia. So I am going to suck it up in the hope to raise as much money as possible for this great cause and hope you will all support me by donating. No matter how big or small it will make a huge difference. I am also going to donate my hair to the Little Princess Trust to be made into a wig for little girls with cancer.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of Dementia Dog they are a charitable collaboration formed from the key founding charities Dogs for Good and Alzheimer Scotland. They offer 3 great services Dementia Assistance Dogs, Community Dogs and Dog Day Events

Dementia Assistance Dogs

Dementia Assistance Dogs are trained to live at home with families, where a person has an early stage diagnosis and lives with a full-time carer. Pilot programmes in Scotland and Australia are demonstrating this model brings joy, companionship and practical help to both immediate family and their network.

Community Dogs

This pioneering animal assisted intervention programme involves goal-oriented visits from a Dementia Community Dog and Handler who, working alongside a healthcare professional, can help people with dementia feel more independent, confident and connected in their community.

Dog Day Events

Based at dementia resource centres, Dog Days are fun group events bringing together people with dementia and their carers, with trained pet dogs and Dog Day volunteers. These monthly events encourage communication, positive reminiscence and joy as well as helping build social connections.
