I am running this race on the 10th March to raise awareness of strokes. Strokes don't just happen to the elderly.  My dad had a stroke when he was 40, the age I am now. He was a fit man who had a physical job and who exercised regularly. The stroke changed his life but he was lucky to have been treated so quickly otherwise his recovery might not have been so successful, as was the case for many of the people he met through a local stroke club. Many of whom were also very young and fit... a 16 year old, a famous footballer. Speed in diagnosis is key to reducing the impact of long term damage and disabilities that a stroke can cause. 

Remember the word FAST:

• Face – the face may have dropped on 1 side, the person may not be able to smile, or their mouth or eye may have dropped.
• Arms – the person with suspected stroke may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there because of weakness or numbness in 1 arm.
• Speech – their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake; they may also have problems understanding what you're saying to them.
• Time – it's time to dial 999 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms.
