Race for Life Pretty Muddy Newcastle 2014 11.15am · 19 July 2014 ·
Hi for all reading this page you probably already know me and my story but here it goes...
My name is Lisa and last year I was diagnosed with a very rare form of Ovarian Cancer, a Sertoli Leydig tumour. Only 90-95 people worldwide have this type of cancer.
I felt poorly during July last year and went to see a doctor who told me I had a gastric bug but 5 weeks and numerous doctors trips later I was still very poorly. My stomach was bloated so much I looked like I was heavily pregnant.
Doctors passed it off as a hernia, gall stones, gastric bug but nothing helped or made it better so on the 21st august 2013 I had, had enough and was referred to the hospital for emergency assessment.
I had an X-ray and ct scan which confirmed I had a 20cm long tumour growing on my ovary. I was told there was a good chance I had cancer. I had various tests before they performed surgery to remove the tumour and all tests pointed to a positive outcome and the tumour being benign but it wasn't to be and 10 days after my surgery I had the cancer bombshell dropped on me for the second time.
I started a 9 week intense and aggressive chemo regime during which I had to stay over night at least once a week on a chemo ward at the freeman hospital.
On the 5th December 2013 (my birthday :)) I was given the all clear the chemo had worked.
I go for regular checks and my doctor keeps a close eye on me but my life is eventually starting to return to normal. My hair is growing back my fitness levels are returning and I feel like the old me again! Only with a different outlook on life.
