Story
In 2019 I lost my wonderful Mum to dementia - but in fact we had already started to lose her from her diagnosis 4 years earlier. My wonderful Mother-in-law has also slowly deteriorated over nearly 20 years with dementia, and now my vibrant, full of life Dad - aka Degsy - has been diagnosed and we are watching the light go out for him too. I know so many family and friends who have lost loved ones to dementia, and understand the distress and suffering it causes for everyone involved. It is heart-breaking - and you say goodbye so many times. When they are diagnosed. When they can no longer say your name. When they no longer recognise you. And finally when they pass away. So for 9 epic days, I will Ride Across Britain - covering 970 miles of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes accessible on two wheels starting at Lands End and finally arriving in John O’Groats! This will challenge my physical ability, and my mental strength, but no more than every day challenges those living with or caring for someone with dementia. Every penny raised will go to Alzheimer's Society to support the amazing work they do to support those suffering from Dementia, and funding essential research to develop treatments and hopefully a cure. So please help and support me, every donation counts, and will keep me focused to complete this epic challenge!
