Story

Our precious twins Madelyn and Emelia were born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks gestation, just after Christmas 2015 following fetal laser surgery after being diagnosed with late Stage 4 Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Their “big” sister Cari had turned 2 years old less than two weeks before and was only a baby herself when she had to try and understand that her Mummy and Daddy would need to be away from home for the next few months.

Madelyn and Emelia were born at Wrexham Maelor hospital, weighing a mere 1lb 4ozs and 1lb 5ozs and required resuscitation, ventilation and intensive care treatment from birth. The wonderful and amazing staff at Wrexham SCBU saved their lives.

It was a journey nobody could ever imagine, with the girl’s progress taking 2 steps forward and 3 steps back. A rollercoaster, where Cari and Matthew (the girls big brother) where thrown in at the deep end and had to come along for the ride, without complaint or hesitation. It was heartbreaking, suffocating, soul destroying but in those rare moments when things went well or there was some kind of positivity, it was elating. Finally, after 136 days, Madelyn came home and then Emelia joined her at 169 days old both needing home oxygen, where we still received community support from Wrexham SCBU..

Without the care and support from the staff at Wrexham SCBU, neither the girls or us as a family would have got through those very dark times.

The girls story of strength, resilience and bravery is an incredible one and despite their struggles, worries and adjustments, Cari, Madelyn and Emelia have grown into amazing 7 and 5 years olds who have biggest smiles, a huge love of life and they have the most amazing mermaid hair.

As part of the charity haircut fundraising for Cherish Wrecsam (Wrexham SCBU’s charity) Cari, Madelyn and Emelia have agreed to donate their beautiful long locks to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that supplies real hair wigs to children and young adults under 24 years old, who have experienced hair loss through cancer treatment or other illnesses

With the wonderful support of Owen from Tommy’s Hair Company in Ruthin, we are organising our charity haircut on Saturday 21st August 2021.

We want to give something new to help other young people who are going through hard times, but also we want to give something back to those amazing people who cared and supported us all in our most difficult time, we will be forever thankful that we got to bring our baby girls home.

If you would like to donate, however small, to this wonderful charity Cherish Wrecsam, and support our precious daughters, we would be extremely thankful.

Although I will be a little bit sad to see their beautiful hair cut much shorter, the charity’s need is much greater than ours.

Much love, Liz, Craig, Matthew, Cari, Madelyn & Emelia xxx
