What’s next when you’ve run a marathon? An ultra marathon!! I decided to take on my first ultra (100km/62miles) this September (COVID-19 depending) in order to raise money for Peeps-HIE. 

Sadly this event was cancelled so I have set a new (slightly crazier goal) of running 128km/77miles) around England's capital following the TFL Capital Ring Walk. 

Peeps provide support to parents, families & friends of those affected by HIE, and raising awareness of HIE.

HIE (hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy) is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain before, during or shortly after childbirth. It can impact a child in many different ways. Ranging from minimal damage and normal development to global learning and physical disabilities and sadly death. Regardless of the severity, a baby suffering with HIE will, in almost all cases, be separated from his/her parents at birth and cared for on a neonatal unit in the first days of their life. Some babies will have extensive stays in hospital and will often need life long care. It is a devastating diagnosis and parents, families and carers need as much support as possible. Support to get through those early days and beyond.

I have spent the last four years of my midwifery career specialising in the reduction in the incidence of HIE. This was initially through my work in improving the obstetric and midwifery understanding and application of fetal heart monitoring in pregnancy and birth, and now as a safety investigator looking into these cases.

Having seen first hand the devastating effects on families, I am over the moon to be able to support such a wonderful charity. They supply information at a time of need, buddy (peer) support, counselling and equipment for ongoing care. The charity was started by a couple unexpectedly thrown in to the world of HIE so they truly know what is needed to support others going through similar journeys.
