The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

My name is Lewis. I’m a 12 year old boy who plays drums, Judo and rugby. I also have Asperger’s Syndrome. That means that I sometimes can’t cope with my anger as well or my emotions in general. It can be good though because if I like something I really try hard to be good at it. Like if I like my maths teacher I do well, but if I don’t get along with them then I make mistakes and get frustrated. I sometimes have trouble making friends and keeping them as well. Mainly because people don’t understand me. I find that my pets really help me, because when I get angry I go to my pets to calm me down. The other thing that works well for me is Music. When I get frustrated I play as loud as I can with my drums and it chills me out.

I have been told by my drum teacher that I was going to do well from the very start, he could see it and just knew. He says that I have really good timing and remember the beats really well.

In the past I have been bullied by people at school quite a bit because I am different, but now that I have my drums and people have seen me play them it gives me something to be proud of and makes me feel special.

When I play my drums it just seems to all come together and I can get my hands and feet to do what I want them to do, which is quite impressive as my Dad says that I’m normally really clumsy.

My favourite drummer in the world is Lars from Metallica. I think he’s good because his timing is always good and he comes up with great fills and beats that make the songs so much better. I am currently learning a song called Sad but true by Metallica.

In the past I have tried to raise money for the Autistic Society and I made it into their magazine. I wanted to raise money for them to help people like me because I understand what they are going through, and some of them wont have been as lucky as I have been with the help I’ve had from my parents and family.

What I want to do now is to show people of all abilities that it doesn’t matter if you have anything that is different about you or not that if you really want to try and do something you can. So hopefully if people watch my videos that I want to make, and read my blog they will donate money to me or even start playing music themselves.
