2050 Miles for Climate · 9 June 2021

We are the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change. Along with our sister organisations Stop Climate Chaos Cymru and Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, we are a group of over 140 organisations — including the National Trust, Women's Institute, Oxfam, and RSPB — and 22 million voices strong. We are reaching across the UK to show our love for all the things we want to protect from climate change, and to ask politicians to put aside their differences and commit to doing whatever is necessary to protect them. BEAUTIFUL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER Together we’ve already achieved so much; from reaching millions with our annual Show the Love campaign; to the campaign that led to the UK becoming the first major economy to set a legally binding net zero target; to making history at the biggest ever mass lobby for climate, nature and people, and the first ever virtual lobby of UK Parliament during lockdown.

Story

Thank you for visiting The 2050 Miles Just Giving page! This 2,050 mile expedition aims to push my physical endurance to the limit but more importantly challenge the team's and my ability to live and travel in the most sustainable ways possible and limiting our carbon emissions.

By 2050, we need to reach net zero carbon emissions. In order to achieve this, we need to cut our emissions in half by 2030. Sure, emissions can be offset but they still need to be reduced!  This means we need to start choosing more sustainable ways to live and travel, adopting technologies both new and old.

The humble bicycle is arguably one of society's greatest inventions, to be able to travel long distances relatively quickly under our own power and in some cases travelling by bike can be faster than car. By using a bike for short accessible journeys, a person has the ability to reduce their carbon footprints significantly whilst also improving their health.

Throughout the trip, we aim to generate as much of our electricity as possible by using portable solar panels and sustainably sourced biofuels which will also be used to cook with in conjunction with a solar oven. Throughout the trip we will also be adopting a plant-based diet, which one of the most impactful ways to reduce an individuals carbon footprint.

Our support car will be an electric vehicle utilising Britains ever-growing electric vehicle charging network and the 2050 jersey and jackets are made from 100% recycled materials!

It is easy to think that 2050 is 29 years away but the world requires systemic change now. The Earth’s climate relies on a number of feedbacks which are breaking down and accelerating a disastrous change in climate. Let's adopt sustainable choices together, by getting out on your bike, wearing clothes made from sustainable sources, eating less meat and switching to a renewable energy tariff.

Policy obviously plays a large role as well and supporting charities such as The Climate Coalition we can push for much needed changes to become a greener world.
