Cornish Coast Max Out · 23 February 2021
I have always been interested in the outdoors, in hiking, climbing, running, mountaineering, kayaking, surfing, paddling and more. But being in the outdoors will always come with risks, and activities associated with the outdoors will always have hazards. Sometimes, it does go wrong - and often even if you are well trained and experienced, you need help and assistance.
Having been involved in rescues previously, being able to rely on a group of volunteers at all hours of the day is something that can at times be taken for granted; until it is needed.
Search and Rescue teams across the country rely on fundraising events within the community in order to raise money to pay for kit, training and emergencies. With COVID-19 fundraising opportunities have been extremely limited in their number.
These are people who at a moments notice can be called out to anywhere in the county to assist the police, ambulance and rescue services in a number of situations, and they fully deserve the credit in what they do. Sadly, often is the case when after prolonged periods of searching; they have to organise the safe and dignified removal of bodies of missing people.
Previously as a youth worker, having young people disappear and be alerted to it before alerting the Police is a frightening experience and in these cases when mental health for many has been driven down; having a team as reliable and caring as our Search and Rescue is vital.
So, in the Easter Holidays I will be walking 100miles around the Cornish Coast. I will have either a bivvy or a one man tent and attempt to complete this in either 5 days or my own little stretch target of 4 days. Any faster and I'd have to do 33.33 miles per day and that may be beyond my thinking yet!
Whatever little you can give is for a good cause so please support me in this endeavour!
I look forward to it!
