Tamar Trail Sponsored Walk 15 miles · 11 July 2015

The charity has spent thirty years working throughout Devon and the South West to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose. The charity was founded in 1990 by Peter Swain OBE following a life changing spinal injury. Run and led by disabled people, 71% of our Board of Trustees, 39% of our staff and approximately 89% of our volunteers are disabled or Deaf which means that we have lived experience of the issues facing disabled people. Annually, over 10,000 disabled and Deaf people, their families and carers, benefit from LOD services, including training, volunteering, outreach projects and accessible support services. It is a user-led organisation, meaning we have a first-hand understanding of the issues faced by disabled and Deaf people.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We have volunteered to walk the 15 mile Tamar Trails Discovery Challenge on 11th July to raise some valuable funds for the local user-led disability charity, Living Options Devon. We were hoping for a nice flat route but having received the pack, it seems we are promised 'a number of steep climbs'... It will certainly be a challenge but worth it. Any donation, no matter what size, would be greatly appreciated (as will any donations of plasters!).

This year is Living Options' 25th anniversary, having been established in 1990 by Peter Swain OBE following a sporting accident which left him disabled.  The charity provides a wide range of services to support disabled and Deaf people. For example, the Countryside Mobility scheme provides 'Trampers' (all terrain mobility scooters) which people with limited mobility can use to enjoy exploring countryside locations such as the Tamar Trails.

"Had it not been for the opportunity of hiring a mobility scooter, we simply would not have been able to do anything there except, possibly, sit in the cafe because of my chronic rheumatoid arthritis. We had a wonderful experience seeing the gardens together."

Wish us luck! Thanks, Sarah, Mike, Liz, Geoff and Mary
