After months of preparation involving both physical and financial effort, we were very disappointed to hear that the Himalayan Challenge for 2007 has had to be cancelled. While the initial concerns for our safety were thought to be Iran it has turned out that the ongoing unrest in Pakistan has resulted in that country being declared unsafe for travel. Extensive correspondence between the Rally Organising Committee and the British High Commission in Karachi, Pakistan, has shown that the deterioration of political unrest in that country has forced those authorities to announce that safe passage through Pakistan by the Rally convoy could not be assured. Of course we are very upset but we are not defeated! We have decided to take part in the LOMBARD rally instead. This rally is similar to the Himalayan Challenge in that it is based on competing in a standard production car using only a minimal budget. The Lombard Rally 2007 takes place on the 8-11th November and is an authentic revival of the kind of rallying last seen, when Lombard used to sponsor the RAC Rally. This unique concept meant there was no advance practice and servicing is limited. The majority of the driving is done in Wales. For the revival of the Lombard rallies the route-manager has dug deep into the history books and has come up with the kind of places regularly featured in the original events. The 2006 route was so authentic there was hardly a venue that had not featured on an original Lombard rally. The rally is supported by motor-clubs up and down the land and is only made possible because of their dedication. It takes over 700 people to make the Lombard happen. We hope that those people that have pledged their support to the Woking Hospice and Sam Beare unit for the Himalayan Rally will also support us for the Lombard Rally. It certainly will be a very great challenge for us! We are extremely grateful for your support so far and please carry on helping our cause! http://www.lombardrally.com/
