I'm running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK. I'm raising money to help fund lifesaving research and support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer.
Here are some key statistics about prostate cancer in the UK:
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK, accounting for around 26% of all new cancer cases in men.
Over 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK, which is roughly 1 in 8 men during their lifetime.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in men in the UK, with more than 12,000 deaths annually—equivalent to one man dying from prostate cancer every 45 minutes.
Nearly 80% of men with prostate cancer survive for 10 years or more, thanks to improvements in diagnosis and treatment.
Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, and the risk increases with age. It is most common in men over 75.
Many men are diagnosed late due to a lack of noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Prostate Cancer UK emphasizes the importance of regular checks, especially for high-risk groups.
These figures underscore the importance of early detection, awareness campaigns, and ongoing research to improve treatment and survival outcomes.
