Story
Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in
the UK. I'm running the London Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate cancer
kills 1 in 8 men. That's one dad, partner, brother, son, grandad, uncle or
mate. I'm raising money to help fund lifesaving research and support for men
and their families affected by prostate cancer.
I am not a runner and doing this will be incredibly hard. I
ran it when I was 30 and it seemed a good idea (over a few beers) to run it
again 10 years later, the year I turn 40. As I write this, its 20 weeks until
the day and I’m starting my training today.
My running record is quite unimpressive, my injury history
is much more comprehensive... I ran the London Marathon in 2013 and completed
it in 4:55 for Great Ormond Street having raised a mind-blowing £4500. Back in
October 2020 I signed up the Prostate Cancer ‘Run the Month’ fundraiser and
aimed to run 50 miles in the month and raise £1250 – but 73 generous people
donated £2100 and I ended up running 391 miles instead.
Strava tells me I've run 38.3 miles in the year of 2022 so
far, so knowing I’ve probably got to run that again in the next 4 weeks is a
little scary.
I'd really appreciate anything you're able to donate, I can’t
begin to articulate how much easier it is to go on those long runs in the cold
when you know people have donated and are willing you on. I am hoping to raise
£3500 over the next 20 weeks, in a climate where I know people are struggling with
the cost of living. Thanks again, will update on here how the training goes…
