Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

The London City Scuba (BSAC 1771) club received a visit from Matt's father Roger, donating his sons Scuba Diving Equipment to our BSAC Branch, it had taken 8 years to bring himself round to do this since Major Matthew Bacon was killed in action, in Iraq on the 11th. September 2005.

After hearing Rogers story the club decided to donate £100 to the Outward Bound Trust Bursary in Matthews name, and try to raise further funds for the bursary from the Scuba Diving community.

Included in the equipment was a Zeagle Ranger BCD,which with Rogers permission we sold on ebay for £205.00.

The jacket was brought by Mike Alexander for his 13 year old daughter Zoe who has Type 1 Diabetes as it was too small for him,, Zoe and her family came to our club shortly before they were off to Sharm El Sheik, which was also one of Matts favourite places to dive.

ITN news picked up the story and it went out on Thursday the 18th September 2014

A fitting end to the story we think

If you would like to make a donation to Mats Bursary please do so here.

The British Sub Aqua Club and Scuba magazine are co-operating in spreading the word about a fellow diver and raising funds in his memory.

The Matthew Bacon Bursary gives deserving young people in the Army Cadet Force betwen the ages of 16 and 18 the opportunity to participate in courses run by the Outward Bound Trust.  The Trust runs developmental courses which 'unlock the potential' in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild. These courses are of a standard without parallel, and the young people selected to attend them with this bursary win an opportunity that would not otherwise be available to them.

The Bursary was set up to celebrate the life of Major Matthew Bacon who was tragically killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2005.  As a youngster, Matthew was an outdoor boy, someone who could never sit still and who always had to be building something, leading someone or challenging himself.  These interests grew as he got older and relaxation to him meant scuba diving, skydiving, snow boarding or mountaineering; orienteering, boxing or playing rugby or football.  And when he wasn't somewhere exotic pushing his limits he was studying for an Open University degree in Law.  Life to Matthew was for living, and he was determined to grip it, squeeze it and savour every last drop of it.
