Story
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
Lu’s Story
When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s it was such a shock to us all. Even though we knew she had Dementia, receiving the diagnosis made a horrible possibility an actual reality. My mother had suffered with mental illness all her life but somehow we all coped with that.
When the Alzheimer’s set in, I felt like I lost my very best friend overnight. I always hoped, wished and prayed that something would happen and that I’d get my mummy back.
I never did.
We struggled through eight very long and difficult years during which time, my dad also received the same diagnosis and which we had been absolutely dreading. We now watch his decline on a daily basis. This is the most cruel disease and Dementia, which is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, is the UK’s biggest killer.
Someone develops it every three minutes and currently there is no cure.
As I approach a milestone birthday, I decided to run a half marathon, to raise money and awareness for the incredible charity that is Alzheimer’s Society. It is the UK’s leading dementia charity. They campaign for change, fund research to find a cure and
support people living with dementia today.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read my story and please help this fantastic charity with a small donation which will be most gratefully received. I will be posting my training progress on
Social Media (no surprise!) and any support on there would be fantastic. It’s not going to be that easy for an old bird like me to run 13.1 miles!
