Story
What Am I Doing?
In memory of Charlie O'Rourke, I will, for some stupid reason, be doing the London Marathon 2022 on the 2nd October. I vowed never to do anything like this last year when I somehow finished a triathlon, however after I finally got over that, I did not want to call it there and I wanted to keep raising money and awareness.
Just writing the numbers now scares me but the total distance is 42.2km or 26.2 miles. That is the equivalent of 106 laps of a running track. For those that enjoy their food, like me, it's the same distance as 139,260 Foot Long Subs! The average adult walks 3,500 steps per day - at that rate it would take you just under 19 days to complete. So I have to run 19 days worth of walking in one day. To make things worse, I have set myself a goal of doing it in 4 hours or less.
What Am I Doing it for?
I want to support Pancreatic Cancer UK because it is such a vicious and ruthless form of cancer that can go from showing very few symptoms to the worst in a matter of weeks.
Why Am I Doing it?
Charlie was a friend and mentor. He sadly passed in October 2020. We met through work and from the day he started at BathroomsbyDesign, he lit the place up with bad jokes and a positive attitude. He was the father figure of BathroomsbyDesign. Everyone loved him and looked up to him.
It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months of diagnosis. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case. Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to taking on this injustice using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future. Help them to make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.
Lastly, Why Sponsor Me?
I am an unfit vegan who struggles to run 5km in under 30 mins, so 42.2km will be a challenge. 90kg definitely does not glide through the streets of London well! The pain on my face will be timeless in the countless photos and I am sure these shall provide comedy to everyone I know for years to come.
If that was not enough, I am setting myself a target of 4 hours to beat!
So please find it in your heart to donate whatever you can to a great cause and in memory of a great man!
Rest in peace Charlie!!
