Rowing · 2 June 2014
On June 24, a LondonMetric crew completed a 23 mile row across the English Channel in a traditional Thames Waterman Cutter rowing boat
to raise money for The Ahoy Centre in Deptford, a charity that promotes a
healthy lifestyle by providing the opportunity to participate in water
activities such as sailing and rowing not usually accessible in this area of
London to disabled and disadvantaged people in order to develop essential life
skills, self-confidence and pride.
The team was made up of Will Evers, Nick Minto, Henry Pepper, Neil Crombie, Charles Clarke, Tom Graham and cox, Jessica Temple. They managed to complete the 23 mile row in a time of 4 hours 13 minutes, breaking the charities previous record of 4 hours 53 minutes!
All the money raised will go straight to the charity. For example:
• To train one young disabled person for an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) qualification is £1000
• A Sailability (the RYA term for getting disabled people on the water) Taster Day is £80 per person
• Waterproof jackets for disabled people cost £140 each
• A set of sails cost £1100
• To train a disadvantaged or at-risk youth to become an RYA Assistant Instructor is £2,400
• To run the Shipmates Programme - aimed at local young people aged 8-18 which develops life skills such as planning, team work and leadership through sailing and rowing costs £95,000 per year
Thank you for your support, your sponsorship is hugely appreciated by the team and the Ahoy Centre.
