South Downs Refugee Project is raising money for CITIZENS UK

Jane, Malc, Liz and Julian's Long Walk Home · 17 April 2022

We are the biggest community alliance in Britain, bringing together hundreds of faith, education, labour and residents' groups in communities across the UK. Citizens UK encompasses the Living Wage Foundation, Sponsor Refugees and PACT.

Story

We’re four friends who feel incredibly lucky to have raised our families in the beautiful, safe and peaceful surroundings of Hassocks.

In an effort to raise money for the South Downs Refugee Project, we’ll be attempting to walk home to Hassocks from Winchester along the South Downs Way in a day - Saturday 30th April!

It’s around 70 miles and we’ll be doing it in a relay with two teams, one walking the others driving on to the next changeover spot. We’ll be starting at the crack of dawn and be walking well into the night so any support will be incredibly motivating!

We have named our challenge “The Long Walk Home” with the idea that we might take time to reflect on the journeys and the hardships that so many refugees endure as they leave their own homes behind in search for some of the peace and harmony that we in Hassocks take so easily for granted.

The South Downs Refugee Project is working towards welcoming a refugee family to Hassocks, and helping them resettle into our community under the UK Government's Community Sponsorship scheme.
