My story
You could ask pretty much anyone to tell you one thing about me and most would say 'oh she's a real foodie' (yuk) or 'she can eat, she loves meat!' Yes. It's true I love a cheeseburger, a Nando's and a bacon sandwich. However I don't love animal cruelty. I consider myself a caring and compassionate person (I am a nurse after all!), and an animal lover. I cry at RSPCA adverts and have rescued animals myself. I couldn't even begin to imagine hurting one. So WHY would I let someone hurt them for me, just so I can consume them? Farm animals live (often short) horrific lives, in dire conditions before they are slaughtered. The fishing industry is horrible and detrimental to the environment. Okay, so just give up meat/poultry/fish? Nah, the dairy and egg industry is just as horrendous. Honestly the information is out there, if you wish to educate yourself. I've barely scratched the surface and it really is unbelievable.
SO, I'm going vegan for the whole of January and fingers crossed, thereafter. It won't be easy for me, but I'm excited for the challenge and l'm looking forward to trying new ways of cooking, eating at different restaurants, broadening my horizons and hopefully do my bit for planet and animal welfare.
If you could please sponsor me, 50% of proceeds go to 'Veganuary' who are doing a great job at raising awareness, the other 50% is split between the following charities:
The Retreat Animal Rescue (UK)
Edgar’s Mission (Australia)
Catskill Animal Sanctuary (USA)
Animal Place (USA)
Jacobs Ridge (Spain)
Each sanctuary will receive 10% of the final amount raised through all JustGiving fundraising, so the more you raise for Veganuary, the more they’ll receive to help rescued animals!
Charity's Story
The most abused animals on this planet –the farmed animals– are typically overlooked. We want to change that. Veganuary’s mission is to reduce the suffering of these animals by inspiring people to try vegan in January, and throughout the rest of the year. Farmed animals, just like cats and dogs, are able to experience pain and happiness. The mass production of animals for food and clothing has resulted in an industry that cares little for their well-being, and causes them to suffer in innumerable way. Help change the world for animals.
