The British Hen Welfare Trust is a national charity which has re-homed more than 900,000 hens to date. The charity also educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Full information on our website at www.bhwt.org.uk.

Story

My son Kyle and I are raising money for BHWT, a charity that saves thousands of commercial egg laying hens each year from slaughter and encourages people to adopt hens as pets.

I have volunteered with the charity for over five years coordinating a rehoming site just outside Stirling which has seen over 5000 ex commercial hens go to their forever homes. One hen who was unable to be rehomed was Pico who stayed with us for over two years. She was in poor health, sadly as a result of the caged conditions in which she came from. She weighed less than a kilo and couldn’t walk at first, she was sad and frightened and would cower in corners with her head down taking many weeks to trust the humans around her. Pico had endured 18 months in a cage, devoid of sunlight, fresh air and freedom to roam, all to lay an egg. Fortunately, like most of the hens that are rehomed through the BHWT, Pico thrived in the right environment. Her feathers grew back, she put on weight and began to trust us. She became confident and developed her own personality spending more time in our house than in her own purpose built coop. The transformation in her was amazing to see. Sadly, she died earlier this year but she lived the rest of her life free, loved and doing the things that hens enjoy like scratching the grass and dust bathing.

There are many more hens out there like Pico that are waiting to be rehomed. Please give what you can to support BHWT and we’ll walk a midge infested and gruelling 95 miles walk in return. Thank you x
