SIX WEEKS TO SWIMMING ACROSS LAKE GENEVA

I can’t quite believe I am writing this, or even saying it out loud, but in six weeks time I will be swimming the length of Lake Geneva. Two years ago I couldn’t do four lengths of front crawl now I’m peering over the edge of a giant aquatic adventure that will see a relay team of six of us swim 70k through the night in one of the world’s deepest and most beautiful lakes. It feels a bit like being in that Specsavers advert where the short sighted old couple accidentally get on a roller coaster instead of a bus. I mean this is ludicrous. I am a 48 year old fashion magazine editor (Sunday Times Style) with four kids, a badly behaved puppy, a full time job and a chlorine allergy what do I know about marathon swimming?

But a dream is a dream and sometimes something gets lodged so far under your skin you can’t ignore it. And so it is with swimming ‘the lake of Legends’ as they call it. https://www.lakegenevaswimmingassociation.com/signature-70

SO WHY GENEVA?

Why not? We could have started with smaller lakes, we could have tackled the Channel but Geneva is beautiful, you swim alone, the water is clean and clear, the sky is wide and open, at night there are shooting stars and the view is spectacular. I will be 50 in a year’s time, I am no doubt more than half way through my life. I can’t muck around with half measures, almost experiences. The creeping sadness of midlife some times wakes me in the night and now more than ever I want to feel really alive. Swimming does that for me and I am incredibly lucky my family is so supportive of my dream. So watch this space as the six of us head towards Geneva raising money for Level Water. Will we make it? Right now I can’t predict the answer to that the rules are strict and the training gets harder but we will give it everything we have got.
