Sober Cycle for Spinal Research · 1 March 2021

Every two hours, someone in the UK will become paralysed. Globally, it is estimated that 15.4 million people are living with paralysis. At Spinal Research our vision is to create a world where paralysis can be cured, no matter when the injury occurred or where in the world.

Story

This is my first challenge for 2021!

I will be sober and cycling as many miles as I can throughout the month of March.

March 14th will mark 17 years of living with a spinal cord injury. As the years go on it makes me more and more determined to fight for a cure. Here’s my story:

In 2004 my life was to change forever while I was enjoying a night out with friends in a nightclub, when a man launched himself off of a balcony above me. I was the one he landed on and I sustained a C4/5 spinal cord injury which basically means complete paralysis from the shoulders down and being in a wheelchair.

I battled through some extremely dark times, my family were just an incredible support. It was shortly after returning home after a 10 month stay in hospital that I knew I wanted to somehow make a difference. Along with my brother Tony, I threw myself into the world of medical research for a cure for spinal cord injury and the evidence I saw I believed that one day there could be a possible therapy available.

I’m a Cure Girl and our mission is to make chronic spinal cord injury curable! We fundraise, campaign and support research initiatives across the world.

I am also a proud ambassador for Spinal Research charity Who fund vital research across the world for a cure for spinal cord injury.

I’m hoping to raise as much money as I possibly can, covid has really had an affect on the research progress so it’s imperative we carry on supporting such a great charity!

There are 3.5 million people living with a spinal cord injury and every eight hours in the UK alone someone is told that they will never walk again.

The moral of this story is that spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at anytime.

I will carry on doing as much as I possibly can to facilitate the very urgent medical research that will eventually reverse paralysis!
