Facing the World is a wonderful British charity
that offers reconstructive facial surgery to children with severe facial deformities - caused by facial tumours, cysts, birth defects or sometimes as a result of terrorism or war. Children with these deformities are often teased and bullied by other children - and sometimes rejected by adults. They become isolated and depressed and find it hard to build relationships. Their future is often very bleak. In some cases the deformities lead to blindness or even death.
These children cannot get treatment in their own countries.
Facing the World brings these children to the UK for treatment and also trains doctors and nurses in developing countries to do this difficult work so that children can be treated there.
All the UK doctors and nurses donate their services for free. The money we donate will be spent on hospital, travel and other costs. For children who have to come to the UK for treatment, Facing the World pays the travel and accommodation costs for the child and his or her parent.
The pictures below
show Cissie and Akam, before and after their operations. Cissie, born in the
slums of Kampala, developed a protrusion of her right eye in 2008. A local
charity helped her to see a doctor in Kampala. He found that she had a tumour
in her eye, pushing into her brain, and forcing her eye forward. The local
charity contacted Facing the World, and they operated on her in London in 2013.
The tumour was removed, and Cissy kept her sight. For Akam's story see http://facingtheworld.net/children/previous-patients/akam/.
